Pros: I absolutely love Dragon Medical. I have worked with Dragon daily for the past 6 months. With a good system, Dragon is amazingly accurate and fast. I honestly have no qualms with Dragon. It is by far the best VR out there. The professional versions come packed with extra features too that the more basic versions do not have. The medical version also comes with many medical-specialty vocabularies to choose from which greatly increase accuracy.
Cons: 1. Upper-End Computer: Attempting to run Dragon at the minimum requirements given by Nuance will cause nothing but frustration! The true potential of Dragon 9 can only be unlocked with the most up-to-date PCs. If you'll be running Dragon on Vista, you need to double the recommended specs.
2. TIME/MONEY: You have to be willing to commit a lot of time to learning the program, possibly a couple months. Some of Dragon's more powerful capabilities in these professional versions are only possible through the use of scripted commands which must either be bought from a vendor for quite a price or you can take it upon yourself to learn to write them if you want or need more customized features.
Other Thoughts: I say Dragon Med 9 is worth every penny.
You'll want to think about getting a really good top-of-the-line microphone after you start really learning Dragon. If you don't have a SoundBlaster card, you most likely will need to think about getting a Sound Blaster or a USB sound card. Most laptops (and many on-board soundcard systems) will need a USB sound card to really work with Dragon.
Pros: It really does work. Included medical vocabulary is vast - it understands almost all medical terminology, including esoteric proprietary and generic drug and product names. It can reduce your transcription costs to zero.
Cons: It's still slower than dictating. Expensive. Many words (particularly small ones) still misrecognized. Documentation is completely inadequate for advanced scripting - must buy a third party book. Included support is inadequate, especially in view of price of software.
Other Thoughts: When my transcriptionist retired, I decided to take the plunge. I had tried Version 8 and found it good but just not accurate enough. Version 9 is acceptable - it's not perfect but with training it's quite good. Even though I am an experienced programmer, the available documentation was inadequte when I wanted to learn how to write scripts, so I purchased 'Scripting for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8' by Larry Allen.
