What happened: In King's Landing, Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) told his son Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) that he was to be dismissed from the Kingsguard and sent to Casterly Rock to rule in Tywin's stead. Jaime, however, refused to leave King's Landing - and his sister Cersei (Lena Headey), with whom he is in an incestuous relationship.

Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), his squire Podrick (Daniel Portman) and knight Bronn (Jerome Flynn) waited for Prince Doran Martell of Dorne to arrive. But when the Dornish party arrived they discovered that he was not among their number and his younger brother, Prince Oberyn (Pedro Pascal), had come instead and had already arrived.

When Tyrion tracked Oberyn down in a brothel, Oberyn told him that he had come to King's Landing to seek revenge on those responsible for the death of his sister Elia and her two children. She was married to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, who was killed by Robert Baratheon before King's Landing fell to Tywin's army. He wanted to kill Ser Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane who was rumoured to have raped his sister and split her in half with his sword.

Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) told her new husband Tyrion that she could not eat or sleep since she heard that her brother Robb's direwolf's head was sewn onto his corpse and that her mother's throat was cut and her body thrown into the river - all of which happened at the Red Wedding in season three. Tyrion admitted that what happened to her family was a 'terrible crime'. Tyrion also refused to rekindle his romance with Shae (Sibel Kekilli), for if they were found out his father would kill her.

Lady Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg) and her granddaughter Margaery (Natalie Dormer) planned her wedding to Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson). Joffrey taunted his uncle Jaime for not fighting in the battle of Blackwater Bay, for his age and for losing his sword hand. Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) encouraged Jaime to keep his vow and return the Stark girls to safety but he argued that with their mother Catelyn dead and Sansa married to Tyrion, it was no longer as simple as before. Sansa herself was thanked by Dontos Hollard (Tony Way), the king's fool, for saving his life on Joffrey's name-day celebration, and gave her his mother's necklace.

At Castle Black, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was tried for sleeping with Ygritte, but told the group what he had learned of the wildlings' plans. While some of the group wanted him executed as a traitor, he was eventually released.

Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) grew concerned about how her dragons were becoming less tame as they grew bigger. She led her army towards Meereen, the last remaining great slave city. As they came across a dead slave girl nailed to a mile-post, it was revealed that there was one dead slave child nailed to every mile marker on the road. On the journey, Daenerys forced herself to look upon the face of every single one.

In the Riverlands, Sandor 'The Hound' Clegane (Rory McCann) told Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) that he was planning to use her for ransom with her Aunt Lysa in the Vale. On their way, at an inn, Arya saw Polliver (Andy Kellegher) who had previously stolen her sword, Needle, and after a fight, she reclaimed it and used it to kill him.

What happened: At the Dreadfort, Ramsay Snow's (Iwan Rheon) father Roose Bolton (Michael McElhatton) chastised his son for his treatment of Reek (Alfie Allen) - formerly Theon Greyjoy - who he had castrated and tortured. Ramsay was planning to exchange Reek to the Ironborn for Moat Cailin, which was stopping the Bolton army from returning to the north.

Ramsay had Reek shave his face, in an attempt to prove his submission to him. He lured him into admitting to Roose that Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson) were alive, and told Reek that his father had murdered Robb Stark - who had been like a brother to Theon growing up. Reek did not break down, and continued shaving Ramsay without hurting him.

Roose ordered Locke (Noah Taylor) to find and kill Bran and Rickon, and Ramsay and Reek to capture Moat Cailin.

Beyond the Wall, Bran was reminded by Jojen (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) to use his warg abilities sparingly to avoid getting cut off from his human body. He also had a vision in which he heard 'Look for me, beneath the tree... north' and believed he knew where his group needed to go.

At Dragonstone, Melisandre (Carice van Houten) ordered several people to be burned as a tribute to the Lord of Light, to the delight of Queen Selyse (Tara Fitzgerald) and the disgust of Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) and Shireen (Kerry Ingram).

In King's Landing, Varys (Conleth Hill) told Tyrion that Cersei knew about his relationship with Shae and was going to tell their father, who would surely kill her. Desperate for her to leave him and flee to safety, Tyrion told a devastated Shae that he could never love a whore.

At the wedding, Joffrey presented a distasteful play about the War of the Five Kings, played by dwarves. Sansa was upset by the play's depiction of her dead brother Robb, and Tyrion refused Joffrey's request that he join in. Joffrey ordered Tyrion to be his cupbearer and told him to kneel, but Tyrion refused. Margaery, in an attempt to diffuse the tension, gave Joffrey some wedding pie; as he ate the pie and drank the wine he began to choke. He fell to the ground, poisoned, and before dying pointed to Tyrion (who gave him the wine). Cersei ordered Tyrion arrested on charges of murder, while Dontos led Sansa to flee with him amid the chaos.

Episode 3: Breaker of Chains

Rory McCann as the Hound (Photo: HBO)

What happened: After Joffrey's murder, Cersei and Tywin closed the city gates and ordered all ships to be seized as they searched for Sansa, who had disappeared with Dontos. They were greeted at a ship by Lord Petyr Baelish (Aiden Gillen), who ordered his men to kill Dontos, fearing that he might not be trustworthy.

Tywin discussed the responsibilities and qualities of a king to Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman), who was next in line for the throne. Cersei was left to grieve alone, but Jaime arrived to console her. She asked him to kill Tyrion but he refused, and raped her next to Joffrey's - the illegitimate product of their incest - dead body.

Tywin accused Prince Oberyn of involvement in Joffrey's murder, he denied it but in turn accused Tywin of ordering Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane to rape and murder his sister Elia.

At Dragonstone, Ser Davos tried to find a way to replenish Stannis Baratheon's (Stephen Dillane) depleted forces, and during a reading lesson with Shireen, Stannis's daughter, had her write a letter requesting a loan from the Iron Bank of Braavos to pay for the new army they would need for for their journey to the Wall.

In the North, Samwell (John Bradley) feared for Gilly (Hannah Murray) and her baby's safety and found her a place to stay in Mole's Town.

Daenerys and her army arrived outside Meereen, where she chose Daario Naharis (Michiel Huisman) to fight against the Champion of Meereen. He won, and she then told the slaves of the city of her recent victories in Astapor and Yunkai and how she freed the slaves there. She launched barrels filled with broken slave collars into the city as a symbol of the freedom she was planning to grant them.

Episode 4: Oathkeeper

Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister (Photo: HBO)

What happened: In King's Landing, Jaime visited Tyrion, who denied being guilty of Joffrey's murder. Jaime said that Cersei wanted to recapture Sansa, but Tyrion told him that he was convinced of her innocence.

Lady Olenna Tyrell told Margaery to form bonds with Tommen, Joffrey's younger brother, to ensure that Cersei could not turn him against her - so she visited him later that night and charmed him - and also suggested that she may have been involved in Joffrey's death in order to protect Margaery from Joffrey's brutal nature.

Cersei refused to hear Jaime's suggestion that Tyrion was innocent and questioned his loyalty to her. Jaime told Brienne of Tarth to find Sansa and gave her armour, a Valyrian steel sword which she named Oathkeeper, and the service of Podrick Payne as a squire.

At sea, Lord Petyr Baelish told Sansa that he planned to marry her aunt Lysa in the Eyrie, and that Joffrey's death was a gift to his powerful allies, and that with no motive no one would suspect him. He also told her that a missing stone in her own necklace contained the posion that was used to kill Joffrey.

At Castle Black, Ser Alliser Thorne (Owen Teale) ordered Jon Snow to stop training other men and was advised by Janos Slynt (Dominic Carter) to send Jon on a mission to kill the mutineers at Craster's Keep (where he would hopefully be killed before he could be elected the Lord Commander).

Meanwhile, Daenerys's army was near Meereen where her aide Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) was teaching Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) to speak the language spoken in Westeros. At night, Grey Worm and other members of the Unsullied entered Meereen where they armed the slaves and started an uprising. By morning, Daenerys was in control of the city and ordered 163 of the remaining slave masters to be crucified, the same number of crucified slave children that she passed on the road to Meereen.

At Craster's Keep, the leader of the mutineers and former Night's Watchman Karl (Burn Gorman), after raping several women, ordered Craster's baby son to be deposited outside. Bran and his group heard the baby crying, and were then captured with Bran being forced to admit his true identity. A White Walker took the baby to an ice altar, another White Walker touched him and his eyes turned blue.

Episode 5: First of His Name

Emilia Clarke and Nathalie Emmanuel as Danaerys and Missandei(Photo: HBO)

What happened: In King's Landing, Tommen Baratheon was crowned as king and Cersei decided that Margaery would now marry him in two weeks. Tywin also decided that Cersei would marry Loras Tyrell in a union that would help to settle the debt the Lannisters owed to the Iron Bank of Braavos.

Lord Petyr Baelish and Sansa Stark landed in the Vale of Arryn. As Sansa was still wanted for Joffrey's murder, she pretended to be a girl called Alayne. In the Eyrie, the unstable Lady Lysa (Kate Dickie), Sansa's aunt, however, quickly recognised her niece. Lysa told Petyr she wanted to be married to him that day, that he owed it to her for things she had done for him in the past - including poisoning her own husband and sending a letter to her sister Catelyn that accused the Lannisters (which led Catelyn's husband Ned Stark to leave Winterfell to take up residence in King's Landing in the first episode). He agreed, and at night Lysa and Sansa talked about how Petyr was in love with Catelyn. Though jealous of Sansa and accusing her of seducing Petyr, Lysa told Sansa that once Tyrion was executed, she would marry her son Robin (Lino Facioli).

Daenerys planned to use the ships seized from the Meereneese navy to invade Westeros. She also told Ser Jorah (Iain Glen) that she planned to rule Slaver's Bay.

Beyond the Wall, Bran and his group were held in a hut inside the camp at Craster's Keep. Locke saw them, and told Jon Snow that they should strike soon, but did not tell him that Bran was inside the hut. At sundown, the group were attacked in the hut by Jon's group, and Locke snuck away from the fight to see to Bran. He freed him and picked him up, but Bran used his warg abilities to enter Hodor's mind and pull him free. Using Hodor's body he chased and killed Locke. He wanted to see Jon but Jojen told him Jon would stop their journey north. Jon and his group burned Craster's Keep and the dead bodies left there.

Episode 6: The Laws of Gods and Men

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister (Photo: HBO)

What happened: In Meereen, Daenerys was visited by local people. One of them was a farmer, whose goats were attacked by one of Daenerys's dragons, so she promised to pay him three times their worth. The next person she saw was Hizdahr zo Loraq (Joel Fry) whose father was one of the masters Daenerys crucified. He wanted the right to bury his father's remains, and told her that his father was one of the masters who was against the crucifixion of slave children but Daenerys had never listened to him. She granted his request.

At the Dreadfort, Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan) led her Ironborn soldiers on a raid as retaliation for Ramsay's torture of her brother Theon. She found him locked in the kennels with the dogs but he was reluctant to accept her help, believing her to have been sent as a trick by Ramsay, and denied his name is Theon, claiming it was Reek. Yara told her men that Theon was dead, and the next day Ramsay rewarded Reek with a bath and told him that he would need his help in taking Moat Cailin, where he would have to pretend to be Theon Greyjoy.

In Essos, Stannis and Davos travelled to Braavos to appeal to the Iron Bank for a loan to pay for a new army. The Iron Bank refused them at first, but Davos managed to convince them to support Stannis's cause, while also recruiting Salladhor Saan (Lucian Msamati) and his pirates to Stannis's cause.

In King's Landing, Tyrion Lannister's trial for killing Joffrey began, with Tywin Lannister, Prince Oberyn Martell and Lord Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) as judges. All the witnesses, including Cersei, supported the accusation that Tyrion had killed Joffrey. Jaime privately asked Tywin to spare Tyrion in exchange for Jaime's leaving the Kingsguard and returning to Casterly Rock as Tywin's heir. He agreed to allow Tyrion to join the Night's Watch provided he pleaded for mercy in the trial.

Shae then took to the stand and falsely testified that when she was serving as Sansa's handmaiden she heard Sansa and Tyrion planning Joffrey's murder together as revenge for the deaths of her family. She told the court about Tyrion's sexual desires and Tyrion, furious, interrupted and said that he wished to 'confess'. He lashed out at the people of King's Landing for their ingratitude after he saved them in the Battle of Blackwater Bay, and told his father he did not kill Joffrey but wished that he had, and that he wished he had enough poison for all of them, before accusing Tywin of putting him on trial because of his dwarfism. He refused to be sentenced for a crime he did not commit and demanded a trial by combat.

Episode 7: Mockingbird

Jerome Flynn as Bronn (Photo: HBO)

What happened: Tyrion struggled to find a champion for his trial by combat for the murder of Joffrey, after Jaime refused him because of his left hand. Bronn also refused because Cersei had promised him marriage to a wealthy, highborn woman. At night, Oberyn Martell visited Tyrion and told him that he had been there in Tyrion's infancy and always knew about Cersei's hatred for him, that she blamed him from the moment he was born for their mother's death. Tyrion told him that 'Cersei always gets what she wants', but Oberyn wanted vengeance for the murder of his sister Elia and her children, which he would get if he were able to fight Ser Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane, who would be Cersei's champion.

Brienne and Podrick ate at an inn and were served by Hot Pie (Ben Hawkey), who privately told them that he had travelled with Arya Stark, who was believed to be dead, and that the Brotherhood took her and were planning to ransom her. Podrick told Brienne that Lysa Arryn was the Stark girls’ last living relative with money and the two decided to go to the Vale.

Arya and the Hound were attacked in the Riverlands and the Hound was left with a bite wound. Arya tried to cauterise the wound but he wouldn't let her, telling her about his fear of fire since his brother pressed his face into one as a child.

At Dragonstone, Queen Selyse and Melisandre discussed their plans to leave. Selyse told Melisandre that she did not want her daughter Shireen, to go with them, but Melisandre convinced her that the Lord of Light needed her.

In Meereen, Daenerys found Daario Naharis in her quarters and demanded that he take off his clothes. Ser Jorah speculated whether he was trustworthy, and she told him that she had ordered Daario to lead his army to Yunkai where they would kill all remaining masters. She relented when he told her that if Ned Stark had done the same thing, he would have been killed, and instead decided instead to have Daario take Hizdahr zo Loraq with him to advise the masters of Yunkai to conform to her rule.

In the Vale, Robin talked to Sansa about what would happen when they got married, as Sansa built Winterfell out of Snow. He threw a tantrum, destroying it, so she slapped him. Petyr Baelish came down and told Sansa that he had greatly loved her mother and that he killed Joffrey to avenge her. He kissed Sansa, but she pulled away. Lysa saw this, and summoned Sansa and, in a jealous rage, confronted her near the Moon Door. She pushed her to her knees, but Petyr arrived and promised to send Sansa away if she released her. She did, at which point Petyr told her he only ever truly loved her sister Catelyn, and pushed her through the Moon Door to her death.

Episode 8: The Mountain and the Viper

Sub

Hafthór Júlíus 'Thor' Björnsson as Ser Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane and Pedro Pascal as Prince Oberyn Martell (Photo: HBO)

What happened: The village of Mole's Town was attacked by the wildlings. Gilly was found by Ygritte (Rose Leslie) who spared her life when she discovered her baby. The attack worried Sam, as he was the one who moved Gilly to Mole's Town. The Brothers of the Night's Watch prepared for Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds), the leader of the wildlings, to attack them.

In the North - Reek, as Theon Greyjoy, entered Moat Cailin with a white flag, where he gave Ralf Kenning (Grahame Fox) the terms for their surrender. Kenning was planning to decline the surrender, but was killed by one of his own men who took charge and accepted Theon's terms. When the Ironborn opened the Moat's gates, Ramsay Snow and his army slaughtered the men and took control. As a reward, Lord Roose Bolton made Ramsay a true Bolton, and told him he was his father now. The Boltons, their army and Reek/Theon left for Winterfell.

Across the Narrow Sea - Missandei caught Grey Worm watching her as she washed, and later told Daenerys she wanted to have a relationship with him, but because the Unsullied are made eunuchs when they are young, it would be impossible. Ser Barristan (Ian McElhinney) received a letter with the seal of the Hand of the King. He showed it to Ser Jorah, and explained that it was a royal pardon signed by Robert Baratheon, in exchange for spying on Daenerys. When Jorah admitted to spying on her, she expelled him from Meereen for his betrayal.

Game Of Thrones Season Episodes

Lord Yohn Royce (Rupert Vansittart) and other members of the nobility interrogated Petyr Baelish about the death of Lysa. He claimed that she committed suicide by jumping through the Moon Door, but they didn't believe him and demanded to speak to Sansa, acting as Petyr's niece Alayne. Giving the appearance of breaking down under pressure, Sansa admitted her true identity to them, but went on to support Petyr's story and, supposedly, prove his innocence. Later when he questioned her about why she lied for him, she told him if they killed him for Lysa's death she did not know what might happen to her. Outside, Arya and the Hound arrived at the Bloody Gate, where they were informed of Lady Arryn's death.

In King's Landing Tyrion's trial by combat took place, his champion Oberyn was confident in his chances against the huge Ser Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane (Hafthór Júlíus 'Thor' Björnsson). Oberyn had a personal vendetta against Clegane because he claimed he raped and murdered his sister Elia, and killed her two children. At the beginning it seemed that Oberyn was skilful enough to beat the huge Clegane, and knocked him onto the floor and repeatedly demanded that he confess his crimes, shouting 'You raped her, you murdered her, you killed her children', and tried to have him admit that it had been Tywin Lannister who ordered him to do it. Suddenly, Clegane pushed Oberyn to the ground and gouged out his eyes and squeezed his head so hard he crushed his skull, while proudly claiming responsibility for the murders. Tywin then declared that the fates had spoken and that Tyrion Lannister would be sentenced to death.

Episode 9: The Watchers on the Wall

Kit Harington as Jon Snow (Photo: HBO)

What happened: As the wildlings planned to attack Castle Black, Ygritte told her group of wildlings that Jon was hers to kill and anybody who killed him would get an arrow from her.

In Castle Black, Gilly was briefly reunited with Sam before a blast signalled that Mance Rayder's army had arrived. Jon saw a huge fire burning and prepared his men for battle, as Sam found Gilly and her baby a place to hide and kissed her goodbye and left to defend the Wall.

Ygritte reported to her group that Castle Black was undermanned, and they attacked from both sides. Ser Alliser left charge of the Wall to Janos Slynt (Dominic Carter) who was tricked by Grenn (Mark Stanley) to go to the castle and Jon was left in charge. Giants and a woolly mammoth tried to pull down the gate of the wall and Jon sent Grenn with five men to defend the passage.

Ser Alliser was wounded by Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju), and Sam killed the Thenn Warg after seeing Pyp's (Josef Altin) death, and climbed the Wall. He told Jon what had happened in the courtyard and Jon left the charge of the Wall to Edd (Ben Crompton).

Jon was eventually confronted by Ygritte, who hesitated with her crossbow, but young Olly (Brenock O’Connor) shot her in the back with an arrow and she died in Jon's arms.

On the Wall, the wildling army withdrew and Tormund was captured. The next morning, Jon told Sam he would go North and try to kill Mance Rayder.

Episode 10: The Children

Maisie Williams as Arya Stark (Photo: HBO)

What happened: Opening immediately after the previous episode, Jon Snow headed North to kill Mance Rayder. The pair came face to face and discussed an end to their fight (with Jon Snow still planning to kill him), but were interrupted by a cavalry charge led by Stannis Baratheon. Mance surrendered to Stannis and Ser Davos.

In King's Landing, Gregor 'The Mountain” Clegane lay dying from Oberyn’s poisoned spear, and Qyburn (Anton Lesser) tried to save him. Grand Maester Pycelle (Julian Glover) believed he was beyond help, but Cersei gave responsibility for his care to Qyburn, who told her that if he was able to save Clegane, he would never be the same.

Tywin planned to send Cersei to High Gardens to marry Loras Tyrell. She refused, claiming she would not be separated from Tommen, her last remaining child (Myrcella had been sent away), and eventually told her father that everything he had heard was true, that she was in love with her brother Jaime and that her father was too wrapped up in preserving his family’s power to notice what was happening in his family before his eyes.

She went to Jaime and told him she wanted to be with him, that she didn’t care what other people thought. After initial hesitation he kissed her back and they slept together.

In Meereen, a freed slave told Daenerys he wanted to go back to his former master as he knew no other way to live, she agreed to let him make a one-year contract. Another man came to see her, carrying the burnt skeleton of his three-year-old daughter, who he said was killed by Drogon - one of her three dragons who had not returned to her. Visibly upset, she went to the catacombs and chained up her two other dragons.

At a funeral for the dead Brothers of the Night's Watch, Jon burned Ygritte's body. Further north, Bran Stark and his group reached the large Heart Tree, where they were attacked by a group of undead. Jojen Reed was killed, but Bran, Hodor and Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick) were saved by a Child of the Forest, who took them into the cave under the Tree to meet an old man who told Bran that he would never walk again, but he would fly.

In the Vale, Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne came across Arya Stark and the Hound. When Brienne realised who Arya was, she insisted on honouring her oath to Arya's mother Catelyn Stark to protect her. The Hound refused to let her take her to safety, not trusting her after seeing her Lannister sword. They fought, Brienne threw the Hound off a cliff, while Arya hid. When they left, Arya found the Hound who begged her to kill him. Instead, she took his money and left him to die before travelling alone by horse to a harbour, where she was given a cabin on a ship headed to the free city of Braavos.

Tyrion Lannister, in the dungeon awaiting his death, was freed by Jaime, who told him Varys was helping him and that he had more friends than he realised. They said goodbye to each other in the escape tunnel, but Tyrion snuck into the Tower of the Hand, where he found Shae in his father's bed, and strangled her to death. His father appeared, and Tyrion shot him twice with an arrow, killing him. Varys walked in and discovered what had happened. He helped Tyrion to escape on a ship, then, hearing the alarm raised in the castle, Varys boarded the ship as well.
