Mob Psycho 100 (Japanese: モブサイコ100Hepburn: Mobu Saiko Hyaku) is a Japanese webcomic created by ONE, which began publication on Ura Sunday on April 18, 2012, and concluded on December 22, 2017.^[3] It has been available online on Shogakukan's mobile app MangaONE since December 2014.^[4]Dark Horse Comics has licensed the series for English publication.

An anime television series adaptation produced by Bones aired between July and September 2016.^[5][6][7] The English dub of the series was released by Funimation in December 2016.^[8] A live-action series adaptation premiered on January 18, 2018. A second season of the anime series began airing from January to April 2019.

Plot[edit]

Shigeo Kageyama is an average middle school boy, nicknamed Mob (モブMobu, lit. 'background character') for lacking a sense of presence. Although he looks like an inconspicuous person, he is in fact a powerful esper with immense psychic power. To keep from losing control of this power, he constantly lives a life under an emotional shackle. In order to help learn how to control his abilities, Mob works as an assistant to con-man Reigen Arataka, a self-proclaimed psychic. Mob wants to live a normal life just like those around him, but a barrage of trouble keeps coming after him. With his suppressed emotions growing inside Mob little by little, his power threatens to break through its limits as he eventually encounters other Espers like the Claws

The protagonist, Mob is an eighth grade Esper with powerful psychic abilities. His bowl-cut hairstyle is his defining physical feature. He is not good at reading the atmosphere, and since childhood, has rarely felt or displayed intense emotion. He thinks his power is unnecessary in his life, so he avoids using it. He suppresses his emotions to keep his power in control, but when the percentage of his accumulated feelings reaches 100, he is overcome by the strongest emotion he is feeling at the time and unleashes the full extent of his powers. He works at Reigen's spirit counsel for 300 yen an hour. After being begged to join the Telepathy Club to prevent their dissolution, he instead chose to join the Body Improvement Club hoping not only to impress his secret love, Tsubomi, but also to improve himself as a person. He is credited as Salt Middle School's urabanchō (裏番長 is roughly translated as 'secret school gang leader') known as White T Poison but this remains unknown to many including himself. Mob also possesses an unknown power which far surpasses even the height of his abilities, but is uncontrollable and only awakens when unconscious.

Arataka Reigen (霊幻 新隆Reigen Arataka)

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai^[9] (Japanese); Chris Niosi^[10] (English)

Played by: Kazuki Namioka

A self-proclaimed psychic and Mob's mentor, Reigen runs a low-cost psychic consultation business called 'Spirits and Such'. He lacks actual psychic abilities and is essentially a con artist, using his intelligence and charisma to solve his clients' problems with skills he calls 'secret techniques'. Though he tends to put his own self-interest first, Reigen seems to genuinely care for Mob, and has made him promise never to use his powers against other people. After temporarily acquiring Mob's psychic powers during the battle against Claw's 7th Division, which he used to convince most of the surviving higher-ups to turn over a new leaf and return to society, he has retained the ability to see very low-level spirits.

Dimple (エクボEkubo)

Voiced by: Akio Ōtsuka^[9] (Japanese); Michael Sorich^[10] (English)

A deceptive upper-class evil spirit with red circles on his cheeks who can unleash the full potential of whatever body he possesses. However, he is unable to possess powerful psychics without permission, and cannot take full control of the psychic's body. He has also shown the ability to hypnotize or influence large groups of people. He initially possessed a man to establish a cult called LOL to make himself into a god, but was defeated by Mob and lost most of his spiritual capabilities. Left as little more than a wisp of a spirit, he was able to convince Mob to spare him and was deemed reasonably harmless. Though Dimple found he could not exploit Mob, he remained by his side before his essence was further reduced by Teruki. Dimple then played a role in fully awakening Ritsu's psychic powers, serving as a conduct for Ritsu to channel his powers until he could do it himself.

Ritsu Kageyama (影山 律Kageyama Ritsu)

Played by: Ayumu Mochizuki

Mob's younger brother, a seventh grade student with good looks who is an ace student and member of the Student Council. Ritsu has had an inferiority complex towards Mob's powers, though he is able to hide his obsessive longing for psychic power of his own. He eventually developed his own psychic powers and became a fairly powerful Esper, learning it to be tied to his feelings of grief and guilt while using Dimple to hone his abilities.

Teruki Hanazawa (花沢 輝気Hanazawa Teruki)

Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka^[9] (Japanese); Erik Scott Kimerer^[10] (English)

Played by: Atsushi Arai

Black Vinegar Middle School's 'ura banchou' ('hidden boss'), known to most as Teru. Also a powerful Esper, he originally held scorn for people without psychic power, calling them 'commoners.' He is accustomed to using his power freely in daily life, be it exams or sports, and he excels at it all. Coupled with his handsome looks, he is very popular. After he is lectured and defeated by Mob for his arrogance and for using his powers against others, his perspective on psychic power changes, and he becomes friendlier to those around him. Teru later becomes the mentor for the psychic children that were captured by Claw.

Shou Suzuki (鈴木将Suzuki Shō)

Voiced by: Sachi Kokuryu (Japanese); Casey Mongillo (English)

The son of Claw's leader Touichirou Suzuki, assumed to be a member of the organization before revealing himself as opposing his father. He has been scouting for potential psychics captured by Claw to help him. Shou is an extremely powerful psychic, capable of easily smashing Ishiguro's gravity orbs with little effort. Shou states that he can always find a way to deal with the psychic powers of his opponents. One of Shou's most notable techniques allows him to refract light around him, rendering him invisible to the naked eye.

Claw[edit]

Claw (爪Tsume) is a criminal organization composed of many Espers, gathering others with psychic powers for their scheme to achieve world domination. The Super 5 (5超Gochō) serve as the right hands of their group's leader Touchirou Suzuki with their top agents referred to as the Scars (傷Kizu), named for the wound inflicted on them when they defied and/or challenged Touichirou.

Touichirou Suzuki (鈴木 統一郎Suzuki Touichirou)

Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese); Kyle Herbert (English)

The leader of Claw, Touichirou is a ruthless and cunning man who founded Claw for the sole purpose of world domination and uses everyone he can to achieve this goal. Being an incredibly powerful psychic on par with Mob, he aims to put the rest of humanity under his thumb. He also seeks to find his ex-wife who left him many years ago.

Ishiguro (遺志黒)

Voiced by: Hiroshi Iwasaki, Rumi Ōkubo (Masked) (Japanese); Mike McFarland, Cristina Vee (Masked) (English)

A Scar who is the leader of Claw's 7th Division. He is a diminutive old man who hides his heavily scarred face in a black bodysuit with a gas mask, the mask having a built-in voice changer that made others assume he was a girl. A firm believer that his psychic power to manipulate gravity makes him superior, Ishiguro's arrogance makes him prone to childish temperament to the point of being murderous. After losing to Reigen with his remaining followers renouncing Claw, Ishiguro ends up being dispatched by Shou when he attempts to kill everyone.

Katsuya Serizawa (芹沢克也Serizawa Katsuya))

Voiced by: Takanori Hoshino

An extremely powerful Esper, Serizawa is one of the major members of Claw.

A member of Salt Middle School's Journalism Club who met Mob while investigating the LOL cult. She developed an interest in his psychic abilities and helped found the Psycho Helmet Cult.

Tsubomi Takane (高嶺 ツボミTakane Tsubomi)

Played by: Yuki Yoda

Tsubomi is Mob's childhood friend and his crush. She values hard work and effort over natural talent, and is one of few who truly doesn't care about Mob's psychic ability. Because of her indifference towards his powers, she influenced Mob's decision to not depend on his powers, as well as the decision to join the Body Improvement Club.

Tome Kurata (暗田トメKurata Tome)

Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki (Japanese); Cherami Leigh (English)

Played by: Kasumi Yamaya

The founder and president of the Telepathy Club (脳感電波部Nōkandenpabu), a now-disbanded club that the Body Improvement Club lets use their club room. Despite her clubmates preferring to be lazy, Tome is passionate about telepathy with aspirations of making contact with aliens. She becomes one of Mob's good friends.

Musashi Goda (郷田武蕨Gōda Musashi)

Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (Japanese); Patrick Seitz (English)

The founder and president of the Body Improvement Club (肉体改造部Nikutaikaizōbu), a fitness-based club that took over the club room once held by the Telepathy Club. Raised on a farm, Musashi is kind-hearted with a strong sense of justice who only resorts to fighting when left with no choice.

Tenga Onigawara (鬼瓦天牙Onigawara Tenga)

Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese); Ray Chase (English)

A delinquent at Salt Middle School with a short temper. He is prone to violence, yet held a perfect class attendance record for two consecutive years. He is not above using others to obtain what he wants, having attempted to use the Body Improvement Club to fight Teruki Hanazawa for him. After Mob's destruction of Black Vinegar Middle school, Onigawara inadvertently started the 'White T-Poison' rumor. He later becomes a member of the Body Improvement Club after Shinji Kamuro frames him and turns his class against him, and he decides to better himself as a person. His hair is similar to that of Josuke's hair from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - which is further developed by one of his 'special moves' being similar to Jotaro's special move.

ONE's webcomic began its publication on April 12, 2012, on Ura Sunday.^[3]Shogakukan began publishing the series in tankōbon volumes, with the first volume being published on November 16, 2012,^[11] and the sixteenth volume being published on July 19, 2018.^[12] The final chapter was published on December 22, 2017.^[13]Dark Horse Comics announced on April 23, 2018, that they have licensed the series for English serialization in North America, with the first volume which was released on October 24, 2018.^[14]

On December 2, 2015, it was announced in shonen magazine Ura Sunday that the webcomic would be adapted into an anime television series.^[5] The anime adaptation was produced by Bones and directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa. Hiroshi Seko wrote the scripts, Yoshimichi Kameda designed the characters, and Kenji Kawai composed the music.^[6][35] The series aired between July 12, 2016, and September 27, 2016, on Tokyo MX, later airing on ytv, BS Fuji and TV Asahi Channel 1. The opening theme song, titled '99', was performed by Mob Choir while the ending theme song, titled 'Refrain Boy' (リフレインボーイRifurein Bōi), was performed by ALL OFF.^[7] The series was simulcast on Crunchyroll, while Funimation broadcast the show's simuldub.^[36][37] The English dub was produced by Bang Zoom! Entertainment.^[8] The series was simulcast on Animax in Southeast Asia.^[38] The Bang Zoom!-produced dub has been released on Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack with a limited edition on December 5, 2017, and was broadcast on Toonami on Adult Swim starting October 27, 2018.^[39]Madman Entertainment imported Funimation's release in Australia and New Zealand,^[40] and Manga Entertainment distributed the series in the United Kingdom and Ireland.^[41]

Following a screening of three Bones films, attendees reported that Bones teased that progress is being made on a further Mob Psycho 100 anime project.^[42][43] In October 2017, an event anime titled Mob Psycho 100 Reigen -The Miraculous Unknown Psychic- (モブサイコ100 REIGEN ～知られざる奇跡の霊能力者～Mob Psycho 100 Reigen -Shirarezaru Kiseki Reinōryokusha-) was revealed.^[44] It is a 60-minute compilation of the anime series and features new scenes centered on Arataka Reigen. The event anime was screened twice at the Maihama Amphitheater in Chiba on March 18, 2018, and will later be released on home video.^[45] At the end of the event, a second season of the anime series was announced, with the staff and cast returning to reprise their roles.^[46]Mob Psycho 100 II aired from January 7 to April 1, 2019, with the series being simulcast on Crunchyroll.^[47] On April 18, 2019, Funimation and Crunchyroll confirmed that season two will simuldub on April 25.^[48]

Mob Psycho Manga

Following the conclusion of the second season, a new OVA was announced to be in production, with Yuzuru Tachikawa reprising his role as director.^[49] The OVA, titled Mob Psycho 100: The Spirits and Such Consultation Office's First Company Outing ~A Healing Trip that Warms the Heart~ will be released in September 25, 2019.^[50]

In 2017, the manga won the 62nd Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shōnen category.^[51]
